WHAT IS LAUGHTER YOGA?

😂     Laughter Yoga is a new twist on an ancient practice. The  focus is on increasing joy and energy, reducing stress, promoting health, and creating a sense of community among participants. Laughter Yoga is a group activity that often results in relationship/team-building.


 😂    Laughter Yoga offers a versatile, dependable, and easy to use approach to health and wellness. Each session is designed to the specific abilities and needs of the participants and uses whatever muscles are available to them. No equipment or particular articles of clothing are required. You don't need to be flexible or funny. The minimum recommended duration for a session is 20 minutes. A typical session lasts 45 minutes to one hour.  


😂   The concept of Laughter Yoga is based on the belief that the physical act of voluntary laughter, when done with willingness, provides the same physiological and psychological benefits as spontaneous laughter. Our brain produces chemicals that affect everything from how fast our heart beats, to how well we fight off disease. There is an awareness that our brain talks to our body, but it is not readily  known our body also talks to our brain. Thanks to something called the mind-body connection (see below under "Neuroplasticity...What the Heck Is That?"), our thoughts, feelings, beliefs, and attitudes can positively or negatively affect our biological functioning. The simple act of laughing can tell our brain to produce chemicals that may:

            1) Tell our heart to work better and pump more evenly.

            2) Boost our bodies immune system to help fight off infection.

            3) Give us increased energy and reduce our stress level.

            4) Help improve our mood.

            5) Manage our feelings of pain.

   

😂    The reason we call it Laughter Yoga is because it combines laughter exercises with yoga (diaphragmatic or belly) breathing. This brings more oxygen to our body and brain, which in turn makes the whole body relax. The levels of stress hormones epinephrine and cortisol are reduced, which offsets anxiety and the fight or flight response, giving the individual a sense of well-being. Like yoga, laughter is a physical exercise which dilates blood vessels, normalizing blood pressure and oxygenating  blood and tissues, and it increases lung capacity.  


😂     Laughter is an effective aerobic exercise. Laughter tones muscles and improves respiration. Not only does it increase happiness, but it also strengthens the immune system, reduces pain and lowers stress. More contagious than a cough or a sneeze, laughter relaxes the whole body. It triggers the release of endorphins, promoting a sense of well-being or what is sometimes referred to as a runners high.


😂    There are four components to a typical Laughter Yoga session:

            1) Stretching/Clapping in rhythm

            2) Integrating body and breath

            3) Laughter exercises/Movement

            4) Relaxation exercise/Yoga Nidra 


😂   Laughter Yoga  is practiced in fitness centers, yoga studios, senior centers, workplaces, hospitals, schools, social laughter clubs, with Alzheimer's patients, chronic pain or cancer patients, just to name a few.

😂 Neuroplasticity, also known as brain plasticity is the ability of the brain to change throughout an individual's life.  For decades scientists believed that once we reached adulthood, our brain was incapable of any change beyond negative alterations associated with disease and aging. We now know that is not true and that the brain is incredibly dynamic, with a potentially unlimited ability to change throughout our entire lifespan. At any age new neurological or neural pathways can be created and refined, and our gray matter, which serves to process information in our brain can be thickened, resulting in improved cognition, and our ability to form new, positive habits. 


😂  Stress is associated with most of our illnesses, indicative of this mind-body connection. Although a 2012 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found 60 to 80 percent of illnesses reported to primary care doctors may have a stress component, it is believed that stress is more likely a factor in at least 80 to 90 percent of such cases. Emotional and physical health issues to which stress has been linked sweeps across the body and mind spectrum. Stomach issues, muscle aches and pains, joint and back problems, headaches, low energy, loss of libido, increased blood pressure, increased heart rate, higher cholesterol, and increased risk of heart attack are all associated with stress. Also mood problems such as anger, irritability, depression, panic, and anxiety are associated with stress. Especially associated with stress is reduced immune response, which makes all illnesses, including cancer more likely. 


😂   In recent years, science has begun to recognize the powerful connections through which emotional, spiritual, and behavioral factors can directly affect health outcomes. As research in the field of the mind-body connection is finding, emotions and thought patterns can contribute to balances and imbalances within the body, creating new/positive neural pathways within our brain. Creating these new neuopathways can change behavior, attitude, feelings, and productivity, and thereby promote physical health benefits and fight disease. Subsequently, practices like laughter yoga, hypnosis, visual imagery, meditation, traditional yoga, and biofeedback are being used to reestablished balance and promote health. The brain's plasticity is an infinitely precious quality that we can harness to move from habitual negative/unhealthy feeling states into positive/healthy feeling states.
